College core requirement Reform
Friday, December 10, 2010
I know that many people say that math is an important life skill. I do not completely disagree with them. I think it would be very beneficial if colleges gave students an option to take a course in Business Math. This way students would learn how to handle finances- an important skill to have while in college and especially upon graduation, when they enter the workforce and have to take out mortgages and pay bills; while also satisfying a college's math requirement. http://web.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.caldwell.edu:2048
Some of the justifications that I have heard for keeping math as a requirement in college is that math helps students think analytically. However, there are plenty of other courses that help with analytical thinking. I found an excerpt that makes me think that maybe people should not spend too much time thinking analytically because it has found to cause depression. In this excerpt, it explain thats people who isolate themselves to work on math problems often get depression because of the time and energy to think critically.www.physicsforums.com

Colleges have not yet removed math as a requirement for non-majors and they probably will not remove it in the near future but I wanted to pose a question. How do they define "basic math"? For most colleges, basic math is Algebra. The problem with this though is that if a student does not even learn Algebra in high school because of a prescribed curriculum, how will algebra be "basic" to them? The student then often struggles through algebra in college because they are learning it for the very first time and nsas.undergrad.rutgers.edu/academicsot reviewing it.

In my last blog, I talked about the problem of math requirements in colleges. Now I will propose a remedy.
For all college students whose majors do not involve any kind of math, the colleges should exempt them from taking math. Math is a beautiful subject for people who have the capacity to understand and excel at it . However for students who's weakest area is math but are fantastic in other areas such as English, Art, Language, or History why should math be the sole subject that holds them back from excelling in their strengths?
